Panalpina was recently called in for help by one of its largest oil and gas customers in Angola to avoid a shutdown at one of their main offshore platforms. A critical cargo of specialized pipes, bundles and racks had had to be moved from Malabo in Equatorial Guinea to Cabinda, Angola in a port-to-port operation, and Panalpina deployed its African Star to save the day.

Panalpina recently delivered the main components for the AM3 offshore platform of the Area Magallanes Incremental Project (PIAM in Spanish) from Texas in the US to Punta Quilla, Argentina. The move was commissioned by EPC Techint, which provides worldwide engineering, procurement, construction, operation and management for high complexity, large-scale projects.

Panalpina and Saudi conglomerate Al Rushaid agree to joint venture

Al Rushaid is one of Saudi Aramco’s main suppliers and a large Saudi conglomerate which provides services through partnerships in many different industries including oil and gas, manufacturing and construction. ​Panalpina has gained its largest award with a specific oil and gas major to date. The company was awarded with a long-term contract to manage transportation for a gas project in Iraq. The contract will run over a minimum of five years and involve high air and LCL (less than container load) ocean freight volumes. Work has already begun.

The FPSO Glen Lyon is one of the biggest oil and gas production units ever made. During its tow from South Korea to Norway, up to 160 crew members representing 18 different nationalities worked and lived on board the Glen Lyon. But what is it like to work and live on a vessel that takes five minutes to walk from one end to the other? Panalpina talked to the captain to find out.

Between December 2015 and June 2016, the Glen Lyon traveled 15,600 nautical miles in total, traveling at an average speed of 6.4 knots first from South Korea to Norway and then onwards to its permanent location west of the Shetland Islands. Panalpina assisted BP with the tow of the FPSO Glen Lyon by taking charge of responsibilities such as material management, husbandry and ship agency services.

It was a move to remember for life. Willi Tobler, Panalpina’s global head of transport engineering for Energy and Project Solutions talks in more detail about the challenges he and his team faced when a 76 ton subsea tree for an oil and gas customer had to be loaded onto an Antonov-124 in Malaysia. The tree’s final destination was on the seabed of a gas field located off the coast of Trinidad.

On the fourth loading attempt everything finally came into place and gone were the worry lines in the faces of everyone involved: The Christmas tree for the Caribbean was correctly positioned inside the aircraft. It had been inched past the most critical section right under the cockpit of the An-124, where the maximum vertical clearance is 4400 mm. Every single one of these millimeters was needed.

Cameron Kerr is supervising the construction of Panalpina’s giant new Logistics Manufacturing Services center at Dubai World Central Airport. 90% of the building has been constructed and completion is planned for mid-August. The 40,000 m2 facility will enable Panalpina to grow its logistics and freight forwarding business in the MEAC region.

One of Panalpina’s oil and gas customers is currently engaged in a 15-year drilling program in Oman. The customer enlisted a big steel manufacturer, to supply 62 kilometers of gas pipeline to support the project. Fast track development meant the customer required longer than usual pipes. To ensure timely shipment of this irregular-shaped cargo, Panalpina’s expertise was called upon.

Panalpina had to operate with a steady hand earlier this year as it assisted in the transportation of some very delicate cargo. For the Ichthys LNG Project, several large air cooled condensers (ACCs) were carefully lowered into place.
