Air freight peak season: ready for take-off

News   •   Sep 28, 2018 06:45 GMT

The 2018 air freight peak season is due to begin after Chinese Golden Week. Many trade lanes have already seen double-digit rate increases and further increases are expected. Panalpina has secured extra flights and ensured readiness on the ground and is also testing a new charter tool, which provides an overview of scheduled cargo flights and of all cargo aircraft available for chartering.

As of today, May 18, 2018, Panalpina has added Querétaro International Airport (QRO) in Mexico to the “Speedy” loop of its Charter Network, which also connects Mexico City (MEX) and Guadalajara (GDL) with Panalpina’s air freight gateway in Huntsville (HSV), Alabama. Panalpina is the only freight carrier to serve three international airports with scheduled flights within and out of Mexico.

Panalpina and Dutch authorities gave a Jordanian delegation, headed by His Majesty King Abdullah II, a guided tour of ground-handling operations at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. The program highlighted Europe’s third largest cargo gateway and an innovative logistics model that works fast even when dealing with fresh produce. Topics covered were inspections, security, customs, speed and efficiency.

Airlifting 42,000 kg of frozen guacamole from Mexico to the UK in ten shipments over a six-week period might seem odd. Why ship frozen food by air? If the customer was happy with having the product sent over six weeks, wouldn’t a single shipment by ocean be more reasonable?

With the air freight peak season picking up, the skies are getting busier by the hour. Already in September, Panalpina’s global head of Air Freight, Lucas Kuehner, in an interview singled out HKG to LAX as one key lane where capacity would get even tighter. One month later, the scenario is a reality: “We are running at full capacity but will always find a solution for our customers."

With Luxembourg (Certisys) and Amsterdam (SKAL), Panalpina now has two airport locations in Europe that are licensed for the handling of organic perishables. Both are directly connected to the tarmac, ensuring the shortest possible route between aircraft and transit storage.

The summer period is usually a calmer time for air freight – but not this year. The strong market development with high volumes will likely continue for the rest of the year, further widening the gap between demand and supply. “The challenges are manifold, but we haven taken action to secure extra capacities to meet the growing demand,” says Marc van Dommele, regional head of Air Freight Europe.

At Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, Panalpina now operates two facilities, separated by a runway. One is dedicated exclusively to healthcare products, the other to perishables and general cargo. It's like having two bedrooms in a marriage, separated by a long corridor with lots of shiny lights on the sides. An odd idea, you may say, but it can actually make perfect sense (and save marriages).

Brussels is Panalpina’s first station to have obtained IATA's CEIV Pharma certificate, which is becoming the benchmark for air freight related cross-dock operations for healthcare products. After Belgium’s Federal Agency of Medical and Health Products (FAMHP), IATA is the second organization to have certified Panalpina Brussels from a healthcare perspective.
