Could 3D printing herald a new era of lean supply chains? This is the title of a recently published article of the Lean Management Journal (LMJ) that highlights Panalpina’s ongoing research into the global supply chains of the future. The article's authors, Panalpina's Hrishikesh Pawar and Fevos Charalampidis, are convinced that the trend towards truly lean supply chains is about to accelerate.

Panalpina and Cardiff Business School have strengthened their partnership with the launch of a new Logistics Manufacturing Research Centre. The center will conduct leading research into the fields of distributed manufacturing, 3D printing, the circular economy and the impact of digital manufacturing on global supply chains. The new center has already secured its first research grant.

It was a big night for Nicole and Panalpina. She has won Cardiff University’s ‘People’s Choice’ award for her work on Panalpina’s new inventory forecasting application ‘Demand-Driven Inventory Dispositioning’, in short ‘D2ID’. During a black-tie dinner at Cardiff University, the business innovation award was also officially handed over to Panalpina by Innovate UK.

Her family name is almost as complicated as the mathematics behind Panalpina’s new inventory forecasting application: Ayiomamitou. Nicole by first name and of Greek origin, she has spent most of her time in the past three years to search for the ‘hidden formula’ for lean inventories. Three years ago, Panalpina and Cardiff University in Wales (UK), set out to search for the ‘hidden formula’ for lean inventories. This innovative partnership has allowed Panalpina to launch D2ID, a new inventory forecasting application.The co-innovation approach has been so successful, that the research is now being expanded to include new manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing.
