Love-struck Australians who want to give out roses for Valentine’s Day on February 14 have Panalpina and the Kenyan horticultural industry to thank. International freight forwarding and logistics company Panalpina has just flown an entire Boeing 777 cargo aircraft packed full of freshly cut roses from Nairobi to Sydney, right in time for the romantic holiday.

Same as last year, Panalpina assisted UNICEF by flying relief aid to Africa to help children in South Sudan, where the humanitarian needs after years of conflict remain massive. A Panalpina chartered cargo aircraft landed last night in neighboring Uganda, carrying nearly 70 tons of supplies. The supplies will be trucked to South Sudan and distributed across the country as the dry season begins.

The people of Saint Martin had to live through this experience on Wednesday, September 6, as Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean island causing widespread devastation. ​Panalpina has gained its largest award with a specific oil and gas major to date. The company was awarded with a long-term contract to manage transportation for a gas project in Iraq. The contract will run over a minimum of five years and involve high air and LCL (less than container load) ocean freight volumes. Work has already begun.

It was a move to remember for life. Willi Tobler, Panalpina’s global head of transport engineering for Energy and Project Solutions talks in more detail about the challenges he and his team faced when a 76 ton subsea tree for an oil and gas customer had to be loaded onto an Antonov-124 in Malaysia. The tree’s final destination was on the seabed of a gas field located off the coast of Trinidad.

On the fourth loading attempt everything finally came into place and gone were the worry lines in the faces of everyone involved: The Christmas tree for the Caribbean was correctly positioned inside the aircraft. It had been inched past the most critical section right under the cockpit of the An-124, where the maximum vertical clearance is 4400 mm. Every single one of these millimeters was needed.

Panalpina recently delivered an exceptionally large shipment of pharmaceutical products to Brazil. A cargo plane took off from Frankfurt airport carrying 187 pallets of temperature-sensitive cargo, destined for Brasília International Airport. The shipment was an urgent order from the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
