A scheduled shutdown of a deep-water oil platform is no small undertaking. For one Panalpina customer, their entire maintenance plan would have been derailed if not for Panalpina’s innovative African Star solution for transporting large shipments from the U.S. to Angola expeditiously. Four heat exchangers with a total weight of 47,210 kg were shipped from the U.S. to Luanda in a few days only.

Panalpina was recently called in for help by one of its largest oil and gas customers in Angola to avoid a shutdown at one of their main offshore platforms. A critical cargo of specialized pipes, bundles and racks had had to be moved from Malabo in Equatorial Guinea to Cabinda, Angola in a port-to-port operation, and Panalpina deployed its African Star to save the day.

Panalpina recently delivered the main components for the AM3 offshore platform of the Area Magallanes Incremental Project (PIAM in Spanish) from Texas in the US to Punta Quilla, Argentina. ​Panalpina has gained its largest award with a specific oil and gas major to date. The company was awarded with a long-term contract to manage transportation for a gas project in Iraq. The contract will run over a minimum of five years and involve high air and LCL (less than container load) ocean freight volumes. Work has already begun.

During its tow from South Korea to Norway, up to 160 crew members representing 18 different nationalities worked and lived on board the Glen Lyon. Between December 2015 and June 2016, the Glen Lyon traveled 15,600 nautical miles in total, traveling at an average speed of 6.4 knots first from South Korea to Norway and then onwards to its permanent location west of the Shetland Islands. Panalpina assisted BP with the tow of the FPSO Glen Lyon by taking charge of responsibilities such as material management, husbandry and ship agency services.

It was a move to remember for life. Willi Tobler, Panalpina’s global head of transport engineering for Energy and Project Solutions talks in more detail about the challenges he and his team faced when a 76 ton subsea tree for an oil and gas customer had to be loaded onto an Antonov-124 in Malaysia. The tree’s final destination was on the seabed of a gas field located off the coast of Trinidad.

On the fourth loading attempt everything finally came into place and gone were the worry lines in the faces of everyone involved: The Christmas tree for the Caribbean was correctly positioned inside the aircraft. It had been inched past the most critical section right under the cockpit of the An-124, where the maximum vertical clearance is 4400 mm. Every single one of these millimeters was needed.

Cameron Kerr is supervising the construction of Panalpina’s giant new Logistics Manufacturing Services center at Dubai World Central Airport. 90% of the building has been constructed and completion is planned for mid-August. The 40,000 m2 facility will enable Panalpina to grow its logistics and freight forwarding business in the MEAC region.

It made the headlines earlier this year. For the first time ever, a standard farmed Norwegian salmon was worth more than a barrel of oil. While there is just one type of salmon exported from Norway, it comes in several sizes for different markets. In Taipei they normally make chops out of the salmon, so they order the bigger fish. The U.S. prefers the fillet as opposed to the whole fish.
